after running the new ubuntu for a while its more than obvious that its as good as windows 7 and better than osx. Its so good that when i get my laptop i will use ubuntu on it exclusively.

I've been using linux for a fair few years now. Have tried a lot of different distro's over that time. I recently started using Ubuntu & think it's fantastic. It's very easy in all respects & has great support.

Welcome to the forums Mick0

I like ubuntu and have used it on and off but the main issue with Ubuntu and myself is that i play games so i cannot use it exclusively on my machine, of course i could dual boot and do it that way but it kinda defeats the purpose really don't it.

Maybe one day Ubuntu will support games better (yes i have used wine but it's a massive root around) and i'll be able to make the shift over.

Also Ubuntu on laptops that have a mechanical hard drive sucks becuase when run your lappy off battery you have to put up with *click* *click* click* every few seconds due to the heads parking all the time due to the poor APM arangement in linux at this stage, it can be fixed by editing code and turning APM off but yeah i don't you should have to, it should work off the bat, loads of people have posted about this very issue on the net for years and nothing has ever been don about fixing it for battery mode, they only fixed it for AC mode.

Thanks aj@x,

Fair call, not a gamer myself, so not never been an issue. Must admit, I don't use it on any lappies either, only a couple of servers at work & my home desktop.

For sure, wine is a pain in the ass....

I sold the netbook instead and when i bought it it had xp home basic on it, i am thinking of putting it on my spare desktop but i need the spare with windows on it for the show just in case and dual booting to be honest is a dam pain in the A-s. Ubuntu has just released the new copy and i will send for it, here is a site you may be interested in.Regi http://www.junauza.com/2009/04/15-beaut ... hemes.html

i have an Asus 1000HE eee pc and both the desktop version and the Ubuntu Netbook Remix run extremely well. I do prefer Ubuntu to Windows although i am running Windows 7 at the moment...

i am looking at running Ubuntu again as i prefer the support / community behind the OS, and Ubuntu is extremely sexy also! ;)

the battery life on the 1000HE is rated up to 9.5 hours, of which i get about 7.5 to 8 hours from a charge, with Ubuntu this drops to about 5.5 hours but i would gladly go back as this is the same amount of time i get with Windows 7

i have a brand new desktop sitting on the floor beside me, i am waiting for some loot to buy a new cpu for it. I have already downloaded kubunu and i am going to use that as the main operating system if i can get skype to run, i have heard some good things about the new kubuntu so i'll give it a go if not i will go back to using Ubuntu gnome. Definetely no Windows on this one, Laptops as a main computer leave me cold. I will do a report on Kubuntu for you guys when i finally get the desktop up and running should be a couple of weeks though.

I've not done it, but with Vista it is really easy Ubuntu installs as a dual boot by default.
