i use the vcl media player for watching dvds, but sometimes the volume is low even at full, any ideas how to boost the levels up? even after going into the sounds setting in the control pannel etc..

vlc can boost the sound up to an extra 100% from its volume bar on its gui

Are you having problems with sound even after connecting some headphones to your laptop?

Id probably look for another cause of the problem as it could be a the dvd audio or the vlc audio setting:
Check that the audio setting on the dvd itself is on 5.1 or stereo, try changing the output visa versa.
Try changing the output from VLC instead from:
(VLC AUDIO OUTPUT)
AUDIO > AUDIO CHANNELS > STEREO
or
(DVD AUDIO OUTPUT)
AUDIO > AUDIO TRACK > TRACK #
